The Humane Society of Harrison County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1994, with its stated purpose being: to promote humane care and treatment of all animals in Harrison County needing protection, to prevent cruelty to animals, to relieve suffering among animals and to extend humane eductaion, especially regarding spaying and neutering companion animals. We support the following programs:
Spay/Neuter Drawing — If you are a resident of Harrison County you may enter the drawing by submitting a post card with your name, address, phone number, and description of your dog or cat. Please leave this information at the Shelter, the County Judge Executive's Office at the CourtHouse, or at Harrison Vet Clinic. We draw 24 names each month and will pay for the cost of the surgery for your pet, if your name is drawn! This offer is not good toward an adoption from the Flora Shropshire Animal Shelter. One winner per household, per family, per year. Please take advantage of this offer and help reduce the number of homeless animals born each year. Winners are entitled to one free spay/neuter surgery from either Brooks Animal Clinic or Harrison Vet Clinic.
Spay/Neuter Vouchers — 10% discount on neutering and 20% discount on spaying, limited to Harrison County residents. These vouchers are honored by all three vet clinics in the county.
Prevent-A-Litter Month — 10% spay/neuter discount coupons honored at Brooks Animal Clinic and Harrison Vet Clinic during January and August.
Dog House Recycling — If you have a dog house in good condition which you would like to donate or know of a dog in need of shelter, contact Jennie McKemie at 859-312-1267 or jennie@hshc.us.
Pet Food Recycling — We rebag pet food donated by local businesses and deliver it to the Food Pantry where it is distributed to needy clients, helping them keep their pets at home rather than surrendering them to the animal shelter.
Fostering — We need volunteers to care for shelter dogs and cats in their homes until they are adopted. Please considering becoming a foster parent!
Rabies Clinic — We help with paperwork while vets administer low cost rabies, canine and feline vaccinations in addition to selling dog licenses at four locations during the month of September.
Adopt Some Love! — Each week an adoptable animal is featured on WCYN's daily News Hound. Several adoption events are held at various locations throughout the year to promote animals housed at the Flora Shropshire Animal Shelter. Take a look at our adoptable pets right now!
We have also funded many improvements to the shelter including at 30' x 40' exercise yard, a puppy room and the Sallie McKemie Cattery.
